Wind Pump, South Dakota
you see these pumps every mile or so when you drive around the plains but when you want to find one in a particular lighting context you'll always struggle. I wanted a wind pump in the sun set and this was the only sun we had seen on the trip so far.
As the sun fell slowly towards the horizon I began driving faster and faster along the unpaved road. Clouds of dust being thrown up behind me, but no wind pumps ahead of me. By the time I found one it was almost dark. This meant that getting the shot would be a struggle.
As usual I had to climb over fences as the pump was a short walk from the road. The lighting kind of dictated that I could only shoot it from one angle, and this meant having to lie face down in crusts of steers dung. The camera had to rest on the ground to keep it steady, the shutter speed was lengthy.
There are a few versions of this, one or two with the moon in the background.
