Roseman Bridge

Roseman Bridge

Robert James Waller's novel 'The Bridges of Madison County' was translated into 25 languages with over 12 million copies being sold worldwide. It topped 'Gone with the Wind' in 1995 as the best selling fiction book of all time.

The following that this book has becomes apparent when you walk through this bridge. Although restored for the film version in the mid nineties, the internal timbers are completely covered with thousands of chisselled out notes and messages of people who were moved by the novel, touched by it in some way and in some cases who's course of life was changed by it.
If there was a place that ever carried the same powerful overtones of romance as the last scene of the film 'Cinema Paradiso' then this is it.

Robert Kincaid was luckier with the weather when he photographed the bridge from this view point in the novel. For me the day was overcast, damp and cold.
Despite all the hardware in the car, I chose to shoot this on black and white 35mm on quite grainy stock to soften it up a bit.

I'll be back in a couple of years to do a colour version in better weather.
